Tummy Trials

This project, funded by the University of Washington Innovation Award, developed a framework for self-experimentation in health that drew expertise from computer science, user-centered design, medicine, research methodology and behavioral science. Many health conditions are exacerbated by specific contexts or triggers that are very individual in nature (e.g., Irritable Bowel Syndrome, smoking dependence). The aim was to design a software platform that would allow patients to safely experiment with specific triggers or behavioral strategies, and more rigorously reach to a conclusion about their impact on their personal health. This was a multidisciplinary effort led by James Fogarty, Julie Kientz, Sean Munson, Jasmine Zia and our lab, at the University of Washington.
